What is Glamping?

Two words no one would think could fit in the same sentence, “glamorous” and “camping” have now become a profitable new trend called “glamping.” The hospitality industry has pitched their tents in this new market and are reaping the benefits of the new trend. The term glamping was coined in the UK around 2005, but it was a concept far before that point. Royalty and international leaders have been glamping during their travels and summits for decades. Glamping provides the best of both worlds: an outdoor, natural experience with the luxuries and comforts of a hotel.

Glampsites offer modern comforts such as showers, bathrooms, kitchens, electricity, Wi-Fi and some even provide resort-style amenities such as spas, guided excursions, on-site chefs, happy hours and more! Beyond the breathtaking views and comfortable amenities, glamping has become so popular in part because people can enjoy the tranquility of the outdoors without the hassle and prep of camping. You get all the benefits of nature without having to “rough it.”

Who Goes Glamping?

As you may have guessed, glamping greatly appeals to the millennial generation for various reasons. A recent study found that millennials are 23% more interested in traveling than the older generation. Also, 72% of millennials prefer to spend money on experiences rather than on material items. Beyond that, another study by American Express found that 70% of millennials are looking for a personalized travel experience rather than buying a pre-packaged vacation. Glamping provides a unique, personalized experience, not to mention all the great social media opportunities.

Although glamping does highly appeal to millennials, it canopies beyond the younger generation into the baby boomers as well! The older generation tends to have more disposable income and glamping can be the perfect fix for a stressful work week. Many people who live in the cities are drawn to glamping because it offers a unique, relaxing experience without the stresses of traditional camping or having to trek across the world.

The Future of Glamping

According to Glamping.com, supply and demand has been up by 39% since 2016, and isn’t showing signs of slowing. Cool Camping website reports a 50% increase in bookings during the first 3 months of 2018. These upwards trends in glamping are being seen all over the world, with overnight stays in the UK doubling from 2015 to 2016. There are glampsites all over the world now, one being a Kipsu partner, the Crystal Cove Beach Resort. This resort, located in British Columbia along the Pacific Ocean, offers 9 glamping sites with unforgettable views of the Pacific Northwest.

Whether you are looking to get out of the city, relax in the tranquility of nature, immerse yourself in outdoor activities, or enjoy the comforts you are used to; glamping can be the answer. So leave the camping gear at home, exit out of the pre-packaged vacation sites, and say hello to a personalized, comfortable, and unforgettable glamping getaway.
